MUNCIE – Cornerstone Center for the Arts hosted their monthly First Thursday on October 5. This month the event was Halloween themed to promote upcoming events, and it included spooky costumes, crafts and a performance by belly dancers.

October is going to be a very busy month for Cornerstone Center of the Arts. The main attraction from First Thursday was “Haunt the Park.” From 5-7:30 p.m. characters from Cornerstone’s haunted house were roaming Cornerstone Park to promote the return of Son of Scarevania.

Son of Scarevania is haunted house made possible by volunteers from the community. It costs $1 to enter. It returns at 8 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 6, and will run every Friday and Saturday for the rest of the month.

But don’t be fooled, this haunted house is not for the feint of heart.

Chelsea Westbrook and Emily Huffer have been working with Son of Scarevania for 11 years. They have seen people cry, puke and even “wet themselves” as they walk through the haunted house.

Last year was Sara Delk’s first year volunteering, but she witnessed someone freeze in fear, get stuck in the corner and then break part of the room because they were so afraid.

“It’s great to see reactions and hear screaming [from inside the haunted house],” Jessie Fisher, Director of Education said. She has been working with Cornerstone for three years and loves all of the opportunities that Cornerstone gives to the community.

Fisher said every kid and adult has access to Cornerstone and can express themselves here.

Other attractions of the night included a craft station where kids could make masks or puppets. Some were making witches and others werewolves, but all agreed that they had fun.

Even the Cornerstone belly dancers made an appearance. They performed in the park to a medley of Halloween music.

Karen Dohner has been belly dancing for over three years and said she enjoys the sisterhood it brings.

“It’s all about the way we work together and the bond of friendship,” Dohner said.

Other attractions coming this month include Cornerstone’s Fall Break Art Camp on Oct. 10-12, Bad Art Night on Oct. 18 and the community Halloween Party on Oct. 26. To see the full list of events visit their online calendar, https://cornerstonearts.org/calendar
