When you think of therapy, you think about doctors speaking with patients, helping them with their issues either physically or mentally.
Patients at Hillcroft Services, located in Muncie, Indiana, are helped with their physical disability or mental illness through the use of instruments and song. Better known as music therapy, they aim to teach their younger patients new skills and their older patients pay attention to sustaining quality of life.
According to the Hillcroft Service brochure, a music therapy session may last as long as 45 minutes, beginning with a hello song and ending with a goodbye song. Candidates for music therapy may need help with motor functioning, social or emotional functioning, communication skills, and more.
Anna Wamhoff, the music therapy services coordinator, says that there is no requirement to music therapy sessions. She suggests that if a patient likes music, then music therapy is the right approach.
“Music therapy is needed because it is instantaneous reward. If you have a motor goal, then you would get that reinforcement immediately,” she said.
A younger patient who has been attending the establishment periodically says that music therapy was new to him and wanted to give it a try. He has seen some progress with his mental health.
The music therapy group also hosts events Monday and Tuesday afternoon and Thursday evening.
