The Best Donut in Muncie

There are a lot of options when looking to buy a donut in Muncie, but which one is the best? That’s what I wanted to find out, so I went looking for every donut I could find in Muncie.
For the sake of these reviews, I am going to review the same style of donut of each brand. I’ll be reviewing a basic, chocolate-covered donut.
Concannon’s
Concannon’s is a Muncie staple. Everyone in town knows about this local bakery and nearly everyone enjoys their multitude of tasty pastries. Their chocolate-covered donut is up to their high standards.
The dough is soft, sweet and not too thick. The best part of the dough, though, is its amazing consistency throughout the entire donut.
The clear star of a Concannon’s donut, however, comes from the icing. There is no other donut shop, that I tried, that has icing as good as Concannon’s. It’s light, fluffy and sweet. That sweetness is what separates it from the pack, though. Anybody can make a fluffy icing, anybody can make the chocolate flavor, but nobody has been able to match the unbridled sweetness that makes your taste buds dance, but never overwhelms you with its richness.
The consistency of Concannon’s is also something that puts it up above Krispy Kreme, something we’ll get to later. Every time you go into Concannon’s, you can expect a light, fluffy donut. Not something that can be said for all on this list.
This is a solid donut. The dough is good, but the icing and the consistency of the quality put it up at the top.
Jack’s
This one is a bit of a wildcard. Most people don’t think of Jack’s when considering buying donuts as it’s not as popular as the other two, but it definitely holds its own.
The dough and base of the donut will remind you a bit of Concannon’s because of its texture and lack of outer glaze like Krispy Kreme. The dough is good, sweet but not quite as perfectly soft as Concannon’s.
The separation between the two comes in the icing. The icing is not nearly as light as Concannon’s and it’s a big difference. The icing is a little heavier in your mouth which takes away from the enjoyment of the donut.
Jack’s is also a tad bit more expensive than the other two, especially Krispy Kreme, and the quality doesn’t make up for the jump in price.
Krispy Kreme
This donut needs no introduction. If you’ve lived in America then you’ve had a Krispy Kreme donut. The classic, full glazed donut is an American institution, but is it the best donut in Muncie?
While Muncie has no Krispy Kreme store, the donut are available almost anywhere you look. Gas stations, Wal-Mart, Target, there is no shortage of places to find them, but unfortunately finding them in good shape can be tricky. Gas station Krispy Kreme’s, if you don’t get them early, are either gone or stale by midday. And Wal-Mart donuts could have been sitting for days. Finding a soft, fresh donut can be tough.
Luckily, there’s a reason Krispy Kreme’s are one of the most popular donuts in the country.
They’re the only donut on our list covered in a sweet, sugary glaze. It provides a sweet and textured bite every time and can keep it fresh for a bit longer.
The icing is fine, but nothing special. It’s hardened on the outside in a glaze, much like the outside, which provides a satisfying texture to each bite. The flavors are average, however, and doesn’t stack up nearly as well as the others on this list.
The one thing the Krispy Kreme does have going for it is the price. Usually around 89 cents per donut and around $8 for a dozen. Nearly $5 less than the competitors.
Conclusion
The best bang-for-your-buck donut in Muncie is Concannon’s and it’s not very close. The soft, moist dough along with the light icing is the most enjoyable donut. They’re more expensive than Krispy Kreme but the quality does indeed make up for it in this case. If I were to recommend a donut in Muncie, it’d be Concannon’s every time.
